Children's Museum of Denver

We scheduled a late flight Sunday in order to have time to explore Denver a bit. Our plan involved going to the afternoon Rockies game, but there was lots of rain and the forecast called for more. So, our plans changed. We instead spent a couple hours at the Children's Museum of Denver, which is a very cool place! Best part? The life-sized fire truck, of course!
Mitch was overjoyed! He donned the gear and developed a circuit within the exhibit. It began by punching every button on the phone display.
Then he placed the call: "Hello? There is a mergency. Okay! Be there in no time!" He did not stray from his monologue.
Next, he raced over to the fire pole. This was a slow motion run with exaggerated steps and swinging arms. He'd climb to the platform, cock his arms back in preparation for the leap, then slide down the pole with no hesitation.
Then he would grab one of the firehoses and spray down the fire.
Occasionally he would then run onto the truck. Who knows what he did up there. There were more buttons to push, sirens, lights, and even a stuffed Dalmatian, which he named Sparky. Shannon put on the gear, too, of course, though she was much less animated in her reenactment.
I can't remember him being so completely absorbed. We spent an hour in this part of the museum, easily. He was content the whole time, narrating his stories, jumping and climbing and in heaven. He asked if we could stay and sleep there even. When we did pry him away, he was covered in sweat!
Shannon spent much of the time in the fire station's kitchen, amusing herself with felt pasta.
There were also train stations, a grocery store, and much more to play with. The place was so loud! It worked like a charm in wearing out the kids pre-flight!
Aunt Rachel came with us and got in on the bubble fun. Just as she got a huge one, MBJ raced through it destructively!
SJ was up to her elbows in bubble solution. By the time we left, both kids had managed to step in it, too.
Our flight was delayed and we didn't get to leave Denver until 1120pm, but overall the kids were wonderful. The baseball game was a slugfest with multiple homeruns and extra base hits. Bryan would have liked to go with some of his Johnson cousins, but was a good sport and conceded the benefits of the museum. I doubt the firetruck will soon be topped in Mitchell's world!

Larson Family Reunion in Colorado

We spent the last weekend in Estes Park, CO at a Larson family reunion (Dave's mother's family). We stayed at a YMCA camp with plenty to do for all ages and thoroughly enjoyed being with our family!
Mitch and Shannon were wonderful travelers - and pretty dang cute. They loved the Denver airport with all the moving walkways and escalators. Shannon loves holding MBJ's hand and they got lots of looks. I assume it was because there were so adorable!
The Bertha Larson Johnson clan stayed together in one lodge and we enjoyed seeing cousins and aunts and uncles galore. The weather was lovely and we spent the first evening hanging out in front of our rooms and visiting until darkness drove us indoors.
There was lots of unstructured time and one afternoon we spent playing a pretty rowdy game of kickball.
Rally caps!
Shannon enjoyed her little cousin Avery (fake snake in SJ's mouth).
Mitch loved seeing "Jackie". Here they enjoyed painting some crafts in the craft house. Mitch's firetruck (shocking choice!) is much beloved. He worked so carefully!
Bryan, Chad and Dave enjoyed a morning of fishing with Kim and I took the kids on a walk to the stables. These three have their own speed and objectives, but climbing rocks was always at the top of the list.
Cousin time
The kids were sure that bears frequented the area behind our lodge. They would race down the hill shouting about a bear with panicked glee in their eyes!
Dave turns 65 next week so we had a surprise gathering to roast/appreciate him.
There were no forks for the cake, which bothered Shannon not in the least!
Ready to go on a new adventure!
On Sunday as we left camp, we did a short drive through a small piece of Rocky Mountain National Park. Unfortunately the weather turned cloudy and rainy so our views were obstructed, but the height was still awesome. Bryan was definitely queasy driving along the extreme ledge of the road!
We saw a pair of bull elk racing along the road on our way back toward Denver. They were huge!
Our view from the camp. Quite a lovey place and a great time reconnecting with family!

Camping

We decided to take a midweek camping trip up the Grande Ronde river and see how well the kids could handle it. We just did a one night trip, primarily to avoid major regrets, and it went really well. So much work for just one night, but overall a success.
Shannon is a bookworm and reads everywhere. She makes a certain "reading" noise that is the same humming, sing-song pattern repeated. Very cute.
Our morning fire replete with hot chocolate.
Someone chugs her cocoa!
Sausage, doughnuts and OJ? Yes, please!
Covered so as to avoid new bug bites and be unable to reach the ones already driving me nuts!
Much of the morning was spent in PJs. Mitch wanted to pose on this rock for a picture.
There were lots of rabbits in the campground. There were pretty tame, but allowing Shannon to approach was more than any one of them could bear.
Enjoying the paths and pushing his sister.
Throwing rocks
Someone had made a pool in the middle of the river. It was about 3 feet deep and a delightful place to sit and play. They even fished from there and caught a 3-4 inch whopper!
It is a lovely place. Perfect weather and still nice to come home!

Alaska 2013

We did our family vacation to Alaska and it was a success!
The flights there (and back) went relatively smoothly. Both kids had special carry-on bags and were able to entertain themselves for most of the time. Mitchell absolutely LOVED flying and only slept under very direct instruction!
We arrived in Petersburg on the afternoon of July 2nd with my parents waiting and waving at the plane.
Dad had made Shannon her very own lifejacket, complete with a monkey tail like her brother's, and Mom found ExtraTuf boots in her size for only a couple dollars. Shannon was delighted with her new accessories!
Mitch LOVED being in the boats and was always asking to go for a boat ride. Here he is just leaving Papke's for the first time headed over to the cabin.
After one of his requested boat rides, he returned with a buoy, much to his delight.
The downed logs around the place made for a veritable playground. Shannon loved walking along the logs and Mom was always a willing spotter.
Dad and Bryan went out for halibut twice and were successful both times. Here Bryan shows off a couple of their fish.
Mom does the packaging and I stand around pretending to be useful and writing creative labels on the packages. Halibooty? I think so!
Shannon threw one particular willful fit on a boat ride with her grandparents. Please note the impressive display of color in the rain gear!
Keeping tabs on passing boats.
Bathtime! Mitch remembered this fondly from his first trip and was more than happy to bathe in the tub.
SJ enjoyed it, too. Who wouldn't like warm water up to your shoulders in a tub just for you?
Leaping from stumps was another favored pastime.Poor Mom was always nervous because Shannon didn't always give warning before launching herself!
The kids loved to play with the boat trailer as well, "fishing" with it, catching buoys, and entertaining themselves for great stretches of time.
Happy cheese balls.
Three mornings Mom and I had kid duty as the guys worked with two friends to put those huge beams under the cabin as one phase of reconstruction. Fortunately we had a neighbor's cabin available to use for naps and our mornings went well. We even ventured to town where Mom drove the boat and I the horrid truck!
Papa let the kids color on the beam before it went under and that was a big hit!
Dad's chainsaw helmets became fire helmets and there was a frequent cry of "To the rescue!".
Shannon really enjoyed being read to and would occasionally read to herself.
On a sunny Sunday, we went south to Castle Island for an exploration and a wienie roast. It is a beautiful place!
Shannon and Grama investigating some of the pirate caves.
Mitch was always hunting for shells and here Papa was kind enough to be his pack mule.
Castle.
Castle kisses, for Mom's benefit!
Castle
Check out the dirt and wounds on her face! She fell off of everything while there and would either cry or just bounce up and go for more. A face of rubber!
Driving the boat.
Some quiet time with Grama, reading his new boat book.
Love their boat outfits!
One morning Dad and Bryan took Mitch fishing, which involved floating just offshore. He did catch a few flounders which came home in a 5-gallon bucket. He thought there were still alive and when we left, he asked Grama to keep feeding them for him. I'm sure they did get fed - to the eagles!
Happy family on the beach!
Happy family enjoying the sun!
Our sunset finale! We had a great time. There are so many more photos . . .
My beloved mountains. Such a view!
