Goodbye, Sweet Poly

11 years ago, I got a cat. She was living in my Uncle Steve's wood shop and he, along with my then-boyfriend Bryan, decided I needed to adopt her. So I did. This long-haired, 6-toed cat with attitude moved into my Browne's Addition apartment and we started getting to know each other. It wasn't a smooth start, but I fell hard for her. And, in time, she did the same. Polydactyl was a sweet little beast.
When Bryan and I got married, she spent our honeymoon with Great Grama Sally and then moved to our Hermiston apartment. She was an indoor cat for several years. Once we moved into our home, she finally got an expanded world and loved the freedom of the outdoors.
Her world was rocked again with the arrival of Mitch. Determined to keep a place in my heart, she followed us around a lot. This is her during Mitchie's first week of life, keeping tabs on her people.
She stayed close, but wasn't all that interested in the little ones we added to the family. Once she hurt Baby Mitchell, but only once.
Still, she wanted attention and found ways to get it. Many early parenthood nights I found myself in bed with Bryan snoring on one side, Mitch attached to me, and Poly curled at my feet. I lay awake and wondered how to get my own bed!
Probably because she was always around, the kids learned to love her, too.
She was tolerant.
Poly joined us outside to play...sometimes.
Other times she preferred to watch from a safe distance.
But, as with all cats, she could be counted on to find inconvenient places to nap - like on my master's homework.
Shannon loved Poly and liked to haul her around and hug her. This was not popular with the poor cat, and even now Shan's face is healing from her final run-in with a cornered cat. However, Poly did snuggle our sick little girl when it was needed.
Moving to Ephrata proved trying for her. She rode with me and the peony - and screeched the whole trip.
Once established at Mom and Dad's, the grandcat made herself at home.
I love this cat. She brought fleas into our home, did battle with neighbor cats and an occasional possum, got her 6 long claws stuck in the carpets and my shirts, and destroyed some upholstery in a big way. But she was the queen of evening affection.
Almost like clockwork, after she had her wet food dinner, Poly climbed onto my lap and would allow herself to be cradled like a child. On her back and purring, she wanted her soft tummy rubbed. No other cat I've had has been so charming. I wish she would come home.
I knew it would happen, and I'm afraid it has. Poly will be the first up-close-and-personal lesson in grieving for our children. As we move on, Shannon's sadness, simply put, is all of ours: "It's not the same without Poly."

Hike with Dad

Shannon and Mitch joined their dad for a Sunday afternoon hike. The three of them took a picnic lunch up part of Beezley.
The wind was cool, but they loved it!
Dressed for spring in late November.
The picnic was very popular - especially with Thanksgiving leftovers!
My sweeties!
Such good little hikers might need a longer trip next time!
They merrily hiked down again and went to their Johnson grands to decorate for Christmas. 'Tis the season!

Thanksgiving

Not many photos, but lots for which to be grateful!
Extended seating for a delicious dinner!

We digested a bit and then had dessert at our place. It was a lovely day.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Seattle Saturday

What fools we were to undervalue the 3-day weekends at Stanfield! We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 days off this weekend and even squeezed in a road trip to Seattle for some Husky action!
The rain held off, but the wind was intense! We walked along the waterfront when we arrived.
We admired the Ferris wheel over the water, but didn't have time for it this trip. Instead, we went to lunch and then caught a boat ride around the bay.
And the wind kept us snuggled close!
We braved the outer deck for awhile but it finally became too much for us.
It was fun inside, too, and we learned quite a bit.
Then we climbed aboard the Link and rode up to the U District for some Husky football!
We definitely sported our gear and were just 4 in a sea of over 72,000.
Even though we showed up, our team did not and USC won. However, we enjoyed the pre-game festivities, the new gear, and some time brainwashing our children in a proper football allegiance.
As ever, Go Dawgs!

Shannon is 5!

Shannon turned 5 on Thursday and her celebration has continued into the weekend with a party for family and friends.
This time her cake was a doll and she seemed pleased.
The kids did some painting outside.
The girls were pretty careful and deliberate in their brush strokes
and the boys thought mixing the colors was fun!
There was a variety of soups to choose from
and we enjoyed having company use our dining room furniture for the first time!
Lorry, Erwin and Bailey drove up for the day, much to Shannon's delight.
She took her time opening gifts, and gave hugs to everyone.
Lots of sweet presents - and so much color!
We had the great-grandparents, grandparents, aunts Rachel and Kim, a couple cousins, and the Watsons, in addition to neighbors. It was a happy gathering.
 Sweet hugs
Haylee read the cards to Shan, minus the cursive. Code for adults for years to come!
She got lots of shoes, horses, jewelry, pajamas and more, including
her very own wonder woman hat and cape!
Her wish would likely be that we return to Hermiston, but even so, I think Shan is making progress here. The morning tears are diminishing and she is making some friends.
The swing continues to delight in its new tree.
Happy birthday to our girl. She makes us crazy, breaks and melts our hearts, and is just the most fascinating little willful person. Year 5 has been a doozy - oh what will the next one hold?
