Alaskan 4th

We celebrated Independence Day in Petersburg under gray skies and replete with Americana festivities.
Main street is closed off for the parade and street games. Folks come from all over decked in their holiday colors, or just cannery duds, and enjoy the day in a charming small-town way.
These two made a haul in the candy department. The parade goes around the block twice and they smiled and waved and collected some serious sugar!
We wandered through the booths, found some fair food, and visited with local friends.
Shan even ran in one of the street races and took 3rd place - earning $1!
As if we caught fish this size...
But the smiles are cute! We spent about as much time in town as we could handle and then returned to our island.
The annual neighborhood beach fire potluck had serious decorations this year! Mitch wondered why we flew the flag when we don't like the president. We were able to teach him (I hope) that the country is bigger than one person and it's our flag, too.
We hosted 7 neighbors plus the 7 of us and the weather cooperated beautifully! Lots of stories and laughing.
Over 50 years of friendship and they still like each other!
Neala's cookie judging was a serious undertaking: 3 types of snicker doodles. I think the winner was made with butter. Duh.
And then the fireworks commenced!
Bryan was the lead pyrotechnic. Both Dad and Steve provided ample fireworks to decorate our sky.
Perhaps the highlight of the evening was when we launched a series of candles for the passing ferry. We cheered and waved and huzzahed - and the ferry honked at us in return! Best beach neighborhood BBQ yet!
We had some serious aerials - not legal in our ZIP code!
No injuries and we didn't even hit an errant eagle.
He was persistent and mostly safe.
We cleaned the mess, found a few duds that turned out to be live, and enjoyed the evening.  Happy birthday, America.
